How to Draw a Giraffe
If you ever tried drawing a Horse, it shouldn't be too difficult for you to learn how to draw a giraffe. The torsos and heads of these two animals look almost identical except that giraffe's legs and neck are longer than those on a horse. If you pace yourself and draw in stages using lead pencil and then paints or colored pencils, your giraffe drawing should come out looking very realistic. In this lesson we will learn how to draw a giraffe in #2 pencil, step by step.
To begin, draw three circles and connects them together with straight lines as pictured here. This is an excellent basis for further steps in drawing a giraffe.
Now let's outline giraffe's legs using same circles-and-lines technique. Draw small squares for your giraffe's hooves.
Next, go over the initial contours with firmer pencil strokes and transition to drawing the torso, legs, neck, and head. This part is easier than it looks! Just keep referring to my drawing as you work on outlining the body of your giraffe with lead pencil. Remember not to press hard on the pencil if it's a tentative pencil line, so that you can easily correct it as many times as necessary until you get it right. Please note that giraffe typically has long and thin legs and strong and thick neck.
The work in later stages is a piece of cake. After all, you have almost completed the outline of a giraffe's body. After erasing extra pencil lines, you should see a nearly finished sketch. Now add the tail with a brush to the giraffe and finish drawing the animal's head.
A giraffe's head is smaller than that of a Horse's Head. Draw a small crest on the neck without spending too much time on it. Remember that a giraffe has one distinctive trait and that is these cute little horns that look like antennas of the extraterrestrial being.
I know you can't wait to color in your drawing. Make sure you pick the right colors. In case you are planning to leave your drawing black-and-white, there are black spots of different sizes and shapes on a white background.
You can also use paints or colored pencils to bring your drawing of a giraffe to life.
